Michael Carrino from LogicAssistance will be attending the 2005 Portable Media Expo and Podcasting Conference in Ontario, California, on November 11 and 12. "With this year's development of the Digital Media Cast Network, an alliance with Audio Concepts and Snyder Advertising Art and Design, along with our involvement with The Highway Channel, this was a bit of a no brainier", said Carrino. "I really think that 2005 is going to be a pivotal year behind the scenes for personal and portable media with 2006 being the year this new media form becomes publicly common. The conventional media system has been rather monolithic and these new forms of media -- most of which depend upon portable media devices -- are going to be very significant factors in the very near future." As anyone who works with internet or computer technology for the past year has probably heard siren song of once MTV VJ, Adam Curry and "podcasting". The technology is not anything really complex more a combination of simple technologies sparked by the general public's growing dissatisfaction for being talked "at" by the conventional media. Technically, podcasting little more than a distribution method of audio files via a RSS feed. RSS feeds have been around for awhile and were used by bloggers as a way to let fans of a blog to catch up with latest entries without having to deliberately visit the site. Instead, an aggregator is used to collect the data in a way some describe as a pull method version of e-mail. The real devil in the podcasting equation is in the details of the community. "Most conventional media people are still too entrenched in the ways of conventional media to understand the podcasting community and its format.", says Carrino. Carrino said, "The moment I saw podcasting, I could immediately see its value." Being involved with media for the past two decades, Carrino has been very aware that media have been broken for years. "It seems that everyone in the industry knows it and will talk about it privately but will not admit it publicly", Carrino continues. "What is really nice to see is some of the local media offices are starting to look at podcasting and other forms of digital media casting as a way to bring more local credibility back to their outlets as well as possibly developing more revenue streams. I've had some very interesting conversations with these people and the public may see the fruits of these in 2006." In the meantime, Carrino hosts several podcasts including The Digital Media Cast Experiment where he talks about subjects useful to people getting into or currently doing podcasts. His experience with conventional media and current technology make him an unique fit for this podcasts. Through this show he helps new podcasters like Stephen Guerra from New York and Charles Cadenhead from Texas as they try to get their new shows off the ground as well as established podcasters like Keith and The Girl with some technical issues and Podcast411 with technical tips. He has caught the eye of the Engadget community with his OSTI 8-1000 (telephone recording and playback interface) as well as been given high kudos from BlindCoolTech.com, a podcast by blind people helping blind people. Carrino has been solely an application developer until about 1997 when he worked closely with John Burkett at the NASA Glenn Research Center (then NASA Lewis Research Center). With Burkett's help, Carrino became very involved with building networked applications. Burkett joined LogicAssistance in 2000 as the senior network security consultant and architect. "This digital media casting is a natural progression", says Carrino, "everything I've been doing with application building to computer networking was merely a way to get the data and the people to talk to each other. Now it's just the people are talking through data to other people." Other podcast in which Carrino is involved are Armchair Apprentice, Armchair Survivor and the Digital Media Cast Network's DigiCast. |
